Description & Technique

Piranesi original hand cut book artwork. Hand cut from the first 4 pages of Susanna Clarke's stunning novel Piranesi.

My papercut focusses upon themes of the novel, the tides, statues, the moon - and more specifically from inspiration in the the opening pages.

I have used letters from the page to create a line from the novel. Again, this like reflects the theme of the sea and of the tides. The line is:

"In my mind are all the Tides
Their Seasons
Their ebbs and their flows."

The papercut is attached to the black background using a combination of glueing and hand stitching. This technique allows the artwork to be free from the background, providing life, depth and shadow.

The box frame has a 20cm gap between the artwork and the glass. This allows the artwork to be a three dimensional piece as several sections of the artwork are raised from the surface.
